    About this item

For sale is a WW2 Front Line Current The Story Of Alkaline Battery Production In Wartime by Britannia Batteries Ltd, Redditch published in 1946.

A fascinating account of the alkaline battery factories in wartime Britain, includes production, air raids bombings, staff fatalities Etc.   The introduction of this book states;   “WE ARE a firm manufacturing a specialised product an ALL-STEEL ALKALINE BATTERY an article not well known to the general public but familiar to Electrical Engineers the whole world over. The Services-Navy, Army and Air Force-had long recognized that the characteristics of the Alkaline storage-battery - its strength, reliability, long life, high electrical performance and ability to withstand rough handling-rendered it particularly suitable for many applications in connection with armaments. Within a very short space of time after War was declared we realized that the volume of orders we were going to receive was destined to stretch our pro- duction capacity to its full and would entail disappointing many of our regular customers due to the urgent need for diverting production from peace-time channels into those special types already approved for the fighting services. One of the features of the Alkaline Battery which make it such an attractive proposition to the Services is its ability to retain its charge for very long periods under widely varying climatic conditions and yet remain ready instantaneously to supply current upon the closing of a switch. This was going to be a mechanised war and therefore batteries would be required in huge quantities -the special characteristics of the Alkaline battery made it specially suitable to deliver 'FRONT LINE CURRENT'.”   This is in good condition.   This will be sent via Royal Mail 1st class signed for and dispatched within two working days.
