    About this item

For sale is a WW1 Book Titled “Regimental Records Of The Highland Light Infantry (Old 71st and 74th)” which was published in 1914 and is a 1st Edition. This book was given to Captain A J Fleming of the highland light Infantry at Christmas 1914. Accompanying this book is four scans of the captains service records.

About Captain A J Fleming;   Captain Fleming served with the 7th highland light Infantry at the rank of captain.    Captain Fleming before the outbreak of WW1 lived at 241, St. Vincent Street in Glasgow.    During his WW1 service he was wounded and awarded a British war badge issue number 240026 on the 7th September 1917.    Unfortunately not much more is known about the Captain, and further research could still be done.    The preface states:   “THE following short record has been compiled with a view of placing within the reach of all ranks, and more especially of all those first joining the Regiment, a concise and authentic account (taken almost entirely from official sources) of the services of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Highland Light Infantry (old 71st and 74th) since their formation. As the conduct of both Battalions of the Highland Light Infantry, their courage, discipline, and endurance in various parts of the world, often under circumstances of great danger and difficulty, have ever been con- spicuously shown, it is chiefly to hold forth these bright examples to the Young Soldier that the present work has been compiled. As, too, there exists in the breasts of all those who have served, and who are still serving, in either Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, a strong esprit de corps and a deep attachment to everything belonging to it, it is hoped that to them also this little work may prove of interest. "I HAVE made many calls upon you, and the answers you have made to them have covered you, your Regiments, and the Army to which you belong, with honour and glory. Your fighting qualities, courage, and endurance have been subjected to the most trying and severe tests, and you have proved your- selves worthy descendants of the British soldiers of the past who have built up the magnificent traditions of the Regiments to which you belong. You have not only maintained those traditions, but you have materially added to their lustre. It is impossible for me to find words in which to express my appreciation of the splendid services you have performed." Army Order by Field-Marshal SIR J. FRENCH to his troops, November 22nd, 1914.”     This will be sent via royal mail 1st class signed for and dispatched within two working days.
