About this item

A good 1845 Pattern Infantry Officers sword Of The 76th Foot.

This example retailed by Cutler and Sons, Hanover Street, Hanover Square, London. The naming style would date this example somewhere between 1855/1867.

The blade bears a personalised escutcheon which reads "J.T. 76th Regiment", which would help narrow down the date further, as this is likely for John Talbot, who joined the regiment in October of 1859.

The brass 1845 pattern gothic guard, with folding inner guard, is of good colour, although it has recieved some blows, and is slightly deformed/squished. Detached to one side of the cartouche, but solid. It could be improved with some careful and gentle correction. The shagreen grip bound with twistwire and in good overall condition, with slight shrinkage and service wear.

The 1845 pattern blade, measuring 32 inches, with "Cutlers" details to one ricasso, and proof slug to the other, personalised panel, and also features the usual decorative etching, floral swags, and a crowned VR cypher. The blade bright, with good crisp etching and with signs of previous service sharpening, and old contact marks, now largely blunted. No movement between the blade and the hilt.

The steel scabbard with twin hanging rings, in good condition, with an even patination, with no serious dents or dings.

An interesting sword, worthy of further research.
