About this item
A good, attributable example of a late Victorian Royal Engineers Officers Sword.
This example retailed by "J. Daniels&Co Artillery Place, Woolwich." who were the preeminent military tailors in serving Royal Artillery and Engineer officers in Woolwich from the 1840's through until the 1960's.
As a Victorian 1897 Pattern infantry officers sword, we can confidently date this example between 1897 and 1901.
The regulation 1897 pattern hilt with crowned VR cypher. Chequered backpiece, shagreen grip free from loss although it does carry service waer, and bound with silver twistwire.
The single fullered 32.5 inch blade with the retailers details to one ricasso, and proof slug to the other. The blade etched with the original owners initials within a panel, along with the feathered lighting bolts and "Royal Engineers" with the RE flaming bomb to the other, alongside the standard floral engraving, royal coat of arms, and crowned VR cypher.
Some light old staining, generally good untouched condition overall.
The blade has been service sharpened.
Housed in its steel dress scabbard, with twin hanging rings.
A very respectable example of a short lived Royal Engineers Officers sword, with excellent opportunities to research the original owner, given the small time window.
Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched. Please send this at the time of ordering, to prevent unnecessary delay in your order being dispatched.
