    About this item

An untouched example of an 1854 Pattern Officers sword, By Wilkinson sword.

This example carries the proof book number 15292 and was proved in July 1867.

The 32.5 inch single fullered blade carries the Henry Wilkinson makers mark at the ricasso. Proof mark of "H.W.", etched with the usual floral and geometric patterns, as well as the crowned VR. There is also a faint Centre of Percussion marking to the spine. It has the added bonus of carrying the original owners family crest and initials, so with some research it ought to be fully attributable. The initials on the sword are W.J.D.R. A copy of the proof book ledger for this sword will be forwarded to the purchaser. This shows the sword was purchased by an E.R.S. Richardson. Given the surname also starts with a "R" there is quite possibly a family connection.

The blade has some areas of old pitting, staining, and loss of finish, but is generally bright, and all the etching is clear. The blade has been lightly service sharpened. There is slight movement between blade and hilt.

The brass hilt is in generally good condition, retaining its basic shape, although it has recieved one or two knocks, one of which has damaged the weak spot at the sword knot slot, which is cracked. Plain thumb rest to the back piece and stepped pommel. The grip is bound in shagreen with copper twistwire, with some 60+% remaining.

Housed in its original scabbard with twin handing rings. Loss of original finish and rust over its entire length, but sound.

A good original Wilkinson sword, with research potential, which could be improved with some TLC.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
