    About this item

Originally issued as "Broadsword, Highland Regiments, Drummer's 1857, this pattern was reissued from 1871 as "Sword, Staff Sergeants, Highland Militia and Volunteers".

It therefore had a very long service life, and consequently, very few survive, making this example both rare, and desirable.

This example carries regimental marking "P. 78. 5." to the underside of the basket, possibly indicating issue to the 78th Highlanders. There is also a crowned inspection mark to the blade at the ricasso, and another on the short spine.

Generally in good, untouched condition, the sword and hilt are covered in old varnish.

Blade length 29.25 inches. Some rounding at the tip has resulted in a loss of about0.25 of an inch.

Central blade fuller to either side of the blade measuring 8 inches.

Shagreen grip bound with copper twistwire, mostly complete, with only minor losses.

Traces of an old fringe tassel underneath the pommel which is sadly long gone, but still holding firm with no movement between blade and hilt.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
