    About this item

A good Victorian Rifle's Officers Sword of the 26th Middlesex (Cyclist) Volunteer Corps.

1827 Pattern Rifle Officers hilt, gothic design with crowned strung bugle within a cartouche. Chequered thumb rest to the backpiece, stepped pommel. Shagreen grip in good condition, with complete twistwire binding.

Single fullered 32.5 inch blade, marked at the ricasso "Kennett, Maddox St, London", likely a military tailor. Fully etched blade, with the original owners initials "S.J.B." within a panel. Crowned VR royal cypher, strung bugle with "Middx 26th Rifles".

Blade covered in old grease, but good clear etching, and should improve with a gentle cleaning. Some minor edge nicks, slight deformation to the point, which could be corrected if desired, although not immediately noticeable.

Housed within its original steel scabbard. Good uncleaned condition, the top suspension ring has been removed, possibly to assist in affixing it to a bicycle. Some minor dents, but generally sound, and a good fit.

From 1887 the 26th Middlesex (Cyclist) Volunteer Corps was the only unit in Britain devoted entirely to the development of cyclist tactics. Lots of information and photographs available online.

The 26th sent men to fight with the Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War.

A good, original sword, to a small and unique unit, with research potential.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
