About this item

A good, untouched and attributable Edward VII 1897 pattern Royal Engineers Officers Sword.

This example was retailed by "JR Guant & Son Ltd late Edward Thurkle, London" Gaunt purchased the remainder of Edward Thurkle's business in 1898, and continued to trade off the more famous cutlers name, using it and the "T" proof slug on thier swords into the 1920's.

The regulation 1897 pattern hilt with crowned ER VII cypher. Chequered backpiece, shagreen grip free from loss although it does carry service wear, and bound with silver twistwire. The remains of the sword knot are still fixed to the hilt. Wear to the plated finish, particuarly to the interior of the guard.

The single fullered 32.5 inch blade of 1892 pattern, with Gaunts details to one ricasso, and proof slug to the other. The blade carries a five digit serial number to the spine.

The blade is fully etched with one panel bearing the original owners name "A.C.Austin", along with the feathered lighting bolts and "Royal Engineers", alongside the standard floral engraving, royal coat of arms, and crowned ERVII cypher. The etching is quite faint, although entirely legible.  It remains bright in appearance, with some patches of light rust and staining. It would benefit greatly from a good clean and polish, generally good untouched condition overall.

Housed in its original Sam Brown field service leather scabbard. The scabbard in good condition, with some minor scuff/marks, with a slight fold at the drag. It would benefit from a feed/polish.

Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched. Please send this at the time of ordering, to prevent unnecessary delay in your order being dispatched.
