About this item
An unusual sword, based on a British 1882 pattern cavarly troopers sword.
This example carried an old label stating it was a Sergeant's 1882, although I can find no reference to that in any of my resources. It is much lighter, and the blade shorter, than an archetypal '82, so It seems more likely that it was produced for colonial use, perhaps in India, as part of a small regiment or perhaps unit order for officers.
I can find no markings at all, either to hilt, blade or scabbard. This may also indicate that it was perhaps made as a prototype, which never saw large scale production.
The guard, with Maltese style cross is similar to the 1882 pattern, with a smooth back strap and stepped pommel. The grip was of shagreen, and has traces remaining, the whole bound with silver twistwire, which remains largely intact.
The single fullered blade measures 31.5 inches, it terminates it a hatchet style point, which is now slightly rounded. Laying it over the scabbard I would say the original length was likely only 32 inches, so it hasn't been much altered.
The scabbard again of 1882 pattern influence, with fixed twin suspension rings. This now missing the scabbards throat.
All in all an intriguing piece, and worthy of further research.
