Edward VII 1897 Pattern Officers Sword

A good clean example of an Edward VII 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword.

Regulation steel guard with crowned ERVII cypher, with chequered backpiece. The shagreen grip is complete, and retaining the twistwire binding.

This example retailed by "John Jones & Co. 6 Regent St, London" who operated at this address and using this name between 1894 until 1912. It would appear to be produced by Pillin, judging by the "P" proof slug and serial number to the spine. Being an EVII cypher, this can be further narrowed between 1901-1910. 

Blade length 32.5 inches.

The blade also carries the original owners overlaid initials, which include an "M" and "S". Interestingly the blade appears to be marked with a Victorian royal cypher, and also carries a light infantry bugle, which may indicate this blade was originally fixed to an 1827 pattern Rifle Officers Hilt. All these clues should help narrow down the original owner. 

Housed in an attractive steel mounted leather field service scabbard. 

Overall condition is good, some light rust and old staining, particularly towards the blades point. Both hilt and blade would benefit from a gentle clean and polish.

An interesting sword, worthy of further research.
