    About this item

George V 1897 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword.

This example was produced by Wilkinson Sword and the proof number dates it to mid 1914. It has been service sharpened, which would indicate it was carried in the opening stages of WW1.

Regulation steel guard of 1897. Crowned GV cypher, with chequered backpiece. The shagreen grip is complete, and retaining the twistwire binding. The vast majority of the original plating is complete, and in good condition. The hilt retains its original sword knot strap, although the acron is now missing. The blade firm in the hilt.

The Wilkinson produced single fullered 1892 pattern blade with a length of 32.5 inches. Wilkinson hexagonal "best" proof slug with HW initials, denoting the highest quality blade available. Proof number and "London Made" etched to the spine.

The blade etched with vacant panels and with foliate engraving, the royal coat of arms, and crowned GVR cypher. The blade in very good condition, remaining mostly bright and clean. Service sharpened for the first 12 inches back from the point.

Housed in a leather field service scabbard. The original suspension strap absent. Good overall condition is good, with only minor scuffs. It would benefit from a clean, feed and polish.

An evocative officers sword very likely carried during the opening phases of the Great War, produced by the best possible maker and of outstanding quality.
