Liverpool Regiment Officers Sword

A good Victorian 1822/45 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword of The Kings Liverpool Regiment.

The guard of 'solid' 1822 pattern, without folding guard. Of typical brass construction in the gothic style, which is in generally good condition, with only minor deformation. Crowned VR cypher within a cartouche. Shagreen grip bound with twistwire in good overall condition, but with some losses to the edges of the shagreen on one side. The sword is solid in the hilt.

The 32 inch 1845 pattern single fullered blade is marked at the ricasso with the retailers details "Hobson&Sons Little Windmill Street, London". Hobson operated at this address between 1878 and 1885. The proof slug with "P" which would indicate manufacture by Pillin, who is known to have supplied Hobson with swords.

The blade carries a cartouche with the overlaid initials of the original owner, which given the limited time frame for production may open up an avenue for research.

The blade is also decorated with the standard foliate etching, and crowned VR cypher to both sides of the blade. There is some staining, but the blade is mostly bright, and the decoration is still clear and legible.

Housed in its original steel scabbard with twin suspension rings. Unusually this has been plated at some stage in its life time, some of which is now peeling towards the shoe. It is free from major dings, dents or splits, although it has had a hole drilled in the bottom of the drag, possibly for attaching to a wall or display board? 

Overall condition is good, not having been in a collection previously. There is room for improvement, and always a bonus to find a sword with research potential.
