About this item
A rather tired example of the distinctive pre regulation figure-of-eight or double-disc guard Royal Naval Cutlass.
General consensus seems to be that this type of cutlass was in use between 1740 and 1790, before a more refined version became the regulation pattern in 1804.
This example has spent many years in a cellar on the south coast of England, as can be seen from the condition.
We can describe this fairly simply by using a "pro's and con's" list.
The Pro's are that it is completely original, and has never been in a collection before. Once the active rust has been treated and stabalised, it should make a evocative display for the right collector.
The Con's are the condition. It is pitted all over, and has active rust. The blade is bent, and the point is rounded, the guard is buckled, and both the guard and grip are very wobbly on the blade.
It may be possible to straighten the guard a little, and perhaps firm up the hilt, but I suspect preservation is the best course of action.
The blade measured 25 inches, with an overall length of 30 inches.
An interesting survival worthy of conservation.
Strictly over 18's only. Photo ID will be required before this item can be dispatched.
