1822/45 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword Guernsey

An interesting British 1822/45 Pattern Infantry Officers Sword. 

This example carries retailers markings of "W.D. Torode, Tailor, Guernsey" to the ricasso.

William Daniel Torode (1817-1882) had premises on the High Street,  St Peter Port, Guernsey until at least 1872. He is described as a Tailor and Draper employing 21 men. I would suggest this sword is more likely to date from the early to mid 1850's.

The regulation gothic brass hilt of 1822 pattern, retaining areas of its original gilt wash finish, free from any major deformation, breaks, dings or dents. The folding guard still with plenty of "spring" and functioning as it should. The grip of shagreen bound with twistwire which is complete and in a very good condition.

The 32.25 inch blade of 1845 pattern, and is in generally good, bright and untouched condition, with minimal staining. Bearing the "Torode" marking at the ricasso, with proof slug to the other. The foliate etching and crowned VR royal cypher are all clearly legible, and the blade has a centre of percussion arrow to the spine. There is some movement in the hilt/grip/blade and I suspect the could be remedied with the addition of a well made leather blade washer. The very tip looks to have been reprofiled in service, with the likely loss of a quarter of an inch.

Housed in its steel scabbard with twin hanging rings. Generally good condition, plum coloured patina overall, which would benefit from a clean and polish.

A nice example to a Channel Island retailer which seldom come onto the market, which could be improved with some light TLC.
