About this item
Made by Eisenhüttenwerke Thale and stamped on the inside wearer’s left side with
“ET66" indicating maker and the size in centimeters. Lot number “2132" (the first “2" a
very light strike) stamped at the rear. Painted with wartime blue gray and showing
remains of the white wash which would have been applied as winter camouflage and
removed in the spring. Vented slotted steel liner bolts with remains of white wash in slots
and around bolts. Luftwaffe eagle decal is about 60% complete, the tricolor decal about
70%. Wartime liner dated 1941, but not the original to this helmet, as it has been adapted
from an M31 liner, the standard liner for most other German WWII helmets. Inside of the
leather is ink-stamped with 1941 date and manufacturer data. Wearer side has the ink-
stamped size 57-61 and hand-written initials “BF”, probably those of the owner. Thin
aluminum plates have been riveted to the zinc-plated steel liner ring for attachment of the
standard paratrooper straps, which appear to be original and exhibit normal wear. Brass
snap fastener marked “ORIGINAL PRYM” (Prym is a German manufacturer of snap
fittings which began producing them in 1903). Helmet overall shows age and
considerable use as would be typically found. This helmet was a gift from a WWII veteran
to a US Army Ranger before he was killed in action during Dessert Storm. With it’s
original liner this helmet would be three times the price.
