About this item
A scarce original late Victorian British Army Slade-Wallace pattern entrenching tool, dating from the period of the Second Anglo-Boer War, 1899–1902.
This substantial military spade features the characteristic broad steel blade, long wooden shaft and distinctive shaped wooden T-handle associated with British Army field equipment of the Slade-Wallace period.
The blade carries Andrew Lucas maker's markings, together with further faint period stamps. It retains an attractive dark aged finish throughout, with the wooden shaft and shaped grip displaying excellent colour and patina.
The Slade-Wallace equipment system was introduced into British Army service during the late Victorian period and saw extensive use during Britain's colonial campaigns, including the Boer War in South Africa. Entrenching tools formed an increasingly important part of the soldier's field equipment as warfare moved towards greater use of trenches and prepared defensive positions.
A particularly evocative and increasingly difficult-to-find piece of Victorian British military field equipment, ideal for a Boer War, Victorian Army or early British militaria collection.
