About this item
An exceptional and quite possibly unique 1960s large-scale scratch-built model of the M31 ‘Honest John’ surface-to-surface artillery rocket and mobile launcher, complete with its substantial purpose-made wooden transit/storage case.
Dating from the height of the Cold War, this remarkable model was constructed during the period in which the Honest John was an operational nuclear-capable artillery weapon. Its age, extraordinary scale and highly detailed hand-built construction elevate it well beyond the normal category of military modelling.
The vehicle, launcher and missile have been individually fabricated with an exceptional degree of detail, including a functioning elevating launcher assembly, removable rocket, detailed cab, seating, equipment lockers, controls, chassis and underside components.
The whole assembly packs into its original purpose-built olive-green wooden storage/transit chest, externally marked “HONEST JOHN” and fitted internally to accommodate and protect the model.
The real Honest JohnDeveloped in the United States during the early 1950s, Honest John was one of the defining tactical weapons of the early Cold War.
The U.S. Army records the basic M31 Honest John system as first deployed during the 1950s. It was a mobile, free-flight, fin-stabilised artillery rocket capable of carrying conventional or nuclear warheads. The system was subsequently adopted by numerous NATO forces.
For Britain, its significance was considerable. The Royal Artillery Museum specifically includes Honest John amongst the key Cold War nuclear-capable missile systems operated by the Royal Artillery.
That historical context makes this enormous hand-built representation particularly evocative: it represents the extraordinary period when tactical nuclear weapons were deployed alongside conventional artillery formations in Western Europe.
Construction & conditionThe model appears to have been predominantly scratch-built by hand from wood, metal and other materials, rather than assembled from a commercially produced kit.
Its construction includes numerous separately fabricated components and an impressive degree of mechanical functionality.
There are expected marks, small paint losses and signs of age/use throughout both the model and its storage case. These have deliberately been left untouched and contribute considerably to its character.
The model appears remarkably complete from our inspection, although given the complexity and handmade nature of the piece we cannot guarantee that every small component remains present.
The missile is an entirely inert model and contains no explosive, propellant or functional weapon components.
The photographs form an important part of the description and prospective purchasers are encouraged to examine them carefully.
