WW1 trench art refers to decorative objects created by soldiers, prisoners of war, and civilians from the discarded materials of war, such as spent shell casings, metal debris, and even wood or bone. These items, often functional or personalized, served as a way to pass the time, cope with the stresses of conflict, memorialize fallen comrades, express national identity, or raise funds for the war effort. While the name suggests creation in the trenches, much of it was made in rear-area workshops by skilled troops who had access to tools and materials.
