About this item
For sale is a Rare WW1 French Enamel Death Plaque To 174th Infantry Reg 2nd Lieutenant Andre Jules Lucien.
This French death plaque was produced for Second Lieutenant Andre Jules Lucien, who served with the 174th infantry during World War One. He was awarded a Croix de Guerre (cross of war) and a Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur (National Order of the Legion of Honour). Unfortunately Andre was killed in action on the 23rd of may 1915. Andre is remembered at The national necropolis of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette which holds 42,970 French soldiers. With further research it appears that the 2nd Lieutenant Andre Jules Lucien was killed in action at the Battle of Artois during the Taking of the tray of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. The Battle of Artois (also called the first battle of Artois1or second battle of the Artois, in German Lorettoschlacht), is a battle that took place on the Western Front during the First World War, from May 9 to June 25, 1915. It takes place at the same time as the second battle of Ypres. Although the French troops, under the orders of General d'Urbal, won several successes, the outcome of the battle remained undecided. In support, the British launched two attacks, Aubers and Festubert. It was the last offensive in the spring of 1915, followed by an interruption of fighting until September 1915. On this date began the second battle of Champagne and the third battle of Artois. The battle resulted in 102,500 French dead or injured and 27,800 British casualties. The Germans had 65,000 dead, injured or missing and 8,000 prisoners. These enamel plaques were made privately by the soldiers family to be attached to a grave. The plaque holds an enamel photograph of the second lieutenant. This is in mostly good condition, one small chip to the enamel on the left hand side. This measures 13 cm width x 18cm height. These will be sent via royal mail 1st class signed for and dispatched within two working days.Disclaimer: Items related to the Nazi regime or the Third Reich sold by dealers on this platform are intended solely for educational, historical, or TV/film prop purposes.
