About this item
An original pair of British Army Service Dress trousers which were made in 1943 and are a large size No. 17.
This pattern of trousers was introduced during the inter-war period and remained in limited production during the Second World War. The trousers are made from the standard serge wool used for British Army uniforms during the First and Second World Wars and feature brown coloured vegetable ivory (plastic) buttons throughout. The rear of the trousers features a 'fishtail' back whilst the leg is cut in a narrow fashion and are tell-tale signs of what many collectors refer to as '1922 pattern'.
The original label is still present to the rear and is bright and legible. It bears the title of 'Trousers, O.R. Service Dress' below which is the size of 17 which is intended to fit a 36-37" waist and a 35" inside leg. The maker's name of 'J. Compton, Sons & Webb Ltd' is also present, as is the 1943 date and the War Department broad arrow marking. There is also a purple issue stamp with the date of June 1943.
The trousers will suit a 35 1/2" waist and when laid flat measure -
Waist - 17 3/4"
Rise - 15 3/4"
Rear rise -
Inside leg - 35"
Outside leg - 48"
Cuff - 10"
The trousers are in good condition for their age with some limited signs of wear or use. There are a couple of holes to the front and a hole to the there is a small hole to the rear of the left cuff although this is a double layer and therefore not a true hole and does not overly detract. These flaws are illustrated in the pictures. Overall they display well and the small flaws have been reflected in the price. Please take time to study these before purchasing and bear in mind that they are a vintage, pre-owned item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.
Altogether a good original pair of trousers which are hard to find - Especially in such a tall size!
This is a vintage item which is 'sold as seen'
