    About this item

A rare pair of original British Army 1960 Pattern DPM Combat Trousers which date from the late 1960s or very early 1970s.

This pattern of trousers was the predecessor to the 1968 Pattern DPM Trousers which are still common to find today. These are however a much rarer beast and hard to find today. In 1966 the British Army adopted a universal camouflage uniform for the first time which was called 'Disruptive Pattern Material'. The first uniforms made in this material were the 1960 pattern as shown here. They are the same design as the standard flat green coloured 1960 combat uniform already in issue at the time.

The trousers are made from cotton sateen material which has the camouflage printed to the outside. Like the green version the trousers feature slash pockets at the waist, a First Field Dressing pocket to the right hip, a map pocket to the left leg and waist adjusters to each hip. There is also a patch pocket to the rear and belt loops are positioned around the waist. The fly fastens with a Newey branded metal zipper which has the letters 'NZ' marked to the front of the puller.

Inside the trousers the original labels are still present and are both bright and legible. The issue label bears the title 'Trousers, Combat (1960 Pattern) below which is the size of 6. The maker's name of 'James Smith & Co. (Derby) Ltd is also present as is the A/78 contract number which dates the trousers to the very late 1960s or early 1970s.

The trousers will suit 34" waist and when laid flat they measure -

    Waist - 17 1/2"
    Rise - 15 1/2"
    Rear rise - 18 1/2"
    Inside leg - 31"
    Outside leg - 44 1/2"
    Cuff - 8"

The trousers are in good condition for their age with some limited signs of wear and use. They have clearly been laundered as the camouflage pattern is very slightly faded but overall they are very sound with no damage or serious flaws. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A hard to find pattern of trousers which are in good condition and have a nice clear label.
