    About this item

An original pair of British Military 1949 Pattern Khaki Drill shorts in good condition which were made in 1954.

This pattern of shorts came into issue with the Royal Air Force at the end of the Second World War but the official pattern came into issue a couple of years later. They saw service for a number of years with the British Army and RAF. This style with the cross belt fastening is now often referred to as 'Gurkha Shorts'. The cross belt closure fastens with chrome plated single prong buckles which are removable for washing purposes. Unlike the 1950 pattern shorts, the 1949 pattern does not feature rear pockets and also has an extra loop to the front of the waist.

Inside the shorts retain their original maker's label which is still legible. The size which is marked as No. 11. The War Department broad arrow marking is also present as is the maker's name of 'J. Compton Sons & Webb Ltd' and the 1954 date.

Due to the style of the waistband the shorts are slightly adjustable. They will suit around a 31" waist depending on desired fit and when laid flat they measure -

    Waist - 15 3/4"
    Rise - 15 1/2"
    Rear rise - 18 1/2"
    Inside leg - 7"
    Outside leg - 19"
    Cuff - 14 1/2"

The shorts are in good condition as can be seen in the pictures. They have clearly been washed and laundered but don't show signs of undue wear. There is some minor staining and a field repair to the front but overall they display well and are totally wearable. Please study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that they are a vintage, pre-worn item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

All in all a nice pair of original 1949 pattern shorts which would make a great addition to any summer wardrobe.
