    About this item

A good original WW2 period Royal Air Force E Type Flying Helmet in a large size.

This pattern of helmet was introduced in the latter part of the Second World War to replace the earlier D Type flying helmet. Unlike its predecessor which was made of cotton drill, the E Type helmet was made of cellular cotton - often referred to as 'Aertex'. This was a popular choice for clothing used in the tropics during WW2 as it was a lightweight, breathable fabric.

The helmet features rubber receiver cups to each side which are fitted with original Type 32 receivers which still retains their original Air Ministry markings. A tan coloured cloth wiring loom joins these together and is fitted with a small jacket plug to the extreme end. The helmet features five goggle straps to the rear, four of which fasten with press studs. There is also an elastic chin strap which again fastens with a press stud. The original owner has marked their initials as 'N. S.' to both the chin strap and the interior of the helmet.

The original size stamp is no longer present inside the helmet but it is a very example which I think must be a size 4. It will certainly fit as a size 3 and most likely bigger.

The helmet is in good condition and displays well. It has signs of wear and use including a couple of holes to the rear which are illustrated in the pictures. Please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-worn item which has some flaws commensurate with age.

A good original example of this pattern of flying helmet in a hard to find large size.
