    About this item

A scarce pair of 1940 dated Denim Battledress trousers in excellent condition and complete with their original issue label.

These rare first pattern denim trousers have all the features of an early manufactured pair of trousers. They have a single pleated First Field Dressing pocket on the right hip, covered buttons on both the map pocket and rear pocket, belt loops and button tabs at the bottom of each leg. The hue and feel of the cotton denim fabric is typical of this early period and totally different to that used later in the war and in the post-war period. The trousers retain all of their original factory fitted stamped brass buttons.

What is particularly special about these trousers is that the original issue label is still present to the rear and is bright and legible. Due to these trousers being designed as workwear and being regularly laundered, the labels are usually washed out or missing. Not only is it still bright and legible  but it also bears a rare manufacturer's name and an interesting font. The label bears the title 'Overalls Trousers Denim, No. 2' below which is the size of 9. The manufacturer's name of 'Kings (Sunderland) Ltd' is also present as is the date of February 1940.. Inside the trousers is the War Department acceptance stamp which is surmounted by the letter Q which denotes 1940 as the year of manufacture.

The trousers will suit someone of around a 34 - 36" waist depending on desired fit and when laid flat measure -

    Waist - 18 1/2"
    Rise - 18"
    Rear rise - 19"
    Inside leg - 28 1/2"
    Outside leg - 44 1/2"
    Cuff - 10 1/2"

It is important to remember that these trousers were designed to be worn over the battledress so should be worn oversie for an authentic fit.

The trousers are in excellent condition and not have not been laundered with no fading or similar. There are only limited signs of wear and age and overall they display very well. There is a small repair to the rear of the right leg although this is only noticeable under close scrutiny. Please study the pictures provided and bear in mind that these are a pre-worn pair of work trousers which may have small issues commensurate with age.

A beautiful pair of early British Army trousers in great condition with a rare maker and fantastic label.
