About this item

An interesting WW1 Staff Officer’s Cuff Rank Tunic belonging to Captain Arthur Vernon Jones of the Royal Welsh Fusilliers.   Arthur Vernon Jones was born in Menai Bridge, North Wales on the 18th of August 1894. He was educated at Epworth College, Flintshire and on leaving obtained employment as an Articled Clerk with Port, Amphlett & Co (Solicitors), Colwyn Bay, North Wales. On Monday 7 September 1914, he enlisted as a Private with the 13th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. One month later he was gazetted as a Second Lieutenant, and was promoted Lieutenant in August 1915, then Captain in April 1917. He served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders and was appointed Adjutant of the Battalion in July 1916, this until April 1917 at which time he was then attached to the 113th Brigade Headquarters. Following this he became a General Staff Officer with the 38th (Welsh) Division, then was appointed to the Quartermaster General’s staff at General Headquarters.   Captain Jones was Mentioned in Dispatches ( London Gazette 20 December 1918) by Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig for gallant and distinguished service in the field. He died at No. 20 General Hospital, Camiers, France on the 16th of February 1919 from Bronchial-Pneumonia contracted whilst on active service. He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.    Tailored in fine gabardine wool serge Captain Jones' Cuff Rank Tunic is a good early war example with characteristic sewn cloth “belt” waistband. It has its full compliment of Royal Welsh Fusiliers throughout, with to the back of the neck the distinctive black silk tails flash of the regiment.    Each cuff has the three cloth pips and twin tapes of a Captain, with these showing clear signs of promotion in the field. The upper right arm then has the red and blue armband of General Headquarters Staff sewn to it, and the left breast the red/white/blue ribbon of the 1915 Star campaign medal.   The collars of the tunic are now devoid of insignia though one can see where both Royal Welsh Fusilliers collar badges and Staff Officer collar tabs have been applied at different times. These two sets of insignia were found in the tunic pocket, presumably indicating these were interchanged depending on the circumstances.   The Tunic is lined in khaki silk with  the back of the neck a tailors label bearing the name Lt.Vernon A.Jones.   Unfortunately the Tunic has suffered some extensive moth damage to the back and to the lower front left breast pocket and waistband. This is shown in my images and reflected in the price.   My final image is of Captain Arthur Vernon Jones himself, here perhaps wearing this very Tunic.
