About this item
PRE WW2 and scarce pattern RAF uniform with the stand collar. I strongly believe due to the rarity of the name inside the tunic that it belonged to Sergeant Ford Rowney who was a 23-year-old Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve pilot during World War II, serving with 50 Squadron. And the only one with that surname on the RAF roll. And because of the rare surname only a handfull of men appear with that surname on the rolls of the other services.
On the night of September 9, 1941, Sgt Rowney piloted a Handley Page Hampden medium bomber on a raid over Kassel, Germany. On the return journey to RAF Swinderby, the aircraft became lost and critically low on fuel.
Tragically, the bomber crashed into trees and exploded near Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire. Sgt Rowney and 20-year-old Flight Sergeant Tony Barker were killed, while two other crew members survived by bailing out.
Sgt Rowney is buried in Arley (St. Wilfrid) Churchyard in Warwickshire.
He also it seems he had to make an emergency landing whilst on training in Leicester. when hes engine failed he stered away from a park with children playing in it and crashed in the yard of a house and was pulled from the wreckage.
If you need sizes please ask. There two small moth holes please see the pictures.
comes with 9 pages of reserch including photo in flying jacket and his grave stone. will send photos on request.
