About sir Henry Blake’s:
LONDON, Feb. 24.—Sir Henry Blake died today at his residence, Myrtle Grove, Youghal, County Cork, Ireland.
The Right Hon. Sir Henry Arthur Blake, G.C.M.G., was born in Limerick, Ireland, seventy-eight years ago. He was Governor of Newfoundland from 1877 to 1888; Governor of the Bahamas for the preceding four years, and Captain General and Governor in Chief of Jamaica from 1889 to 1897, his term having been twice extended at the request of the Legislature and the public bodies of the island. He was Governor of Hong Kong in 1897-1903 and Governor of Ceylon 1903-1907.
Sir Henry Blake, an entirely self-made man, started life in the dry goods stores of Pims in Dublin, which he left when he was appointed to the Royal Irish Constabulary. He rose until he became a Police Magistrate and later Colonial Governor.
Sir Henry was the friend of the late Admiral Dewey, whom he met while Governor of Hong Kong during the Spanish-American war. It is said that he found many ways of manifesting goodwill toward the United States while the American fleet was in the harbor of Hong Kong shortly before the battle of Manila Bay.
