    About this item

A very rare original A.R.P. Emergency Suit dating from the late 1930s or very beginning of the Second World War.

It is unclear whether this suit was produced for the civilian market or for those serving in the Air Raid Precautions. The label is consistent with items made for the ARP but it could have been produced as a private purchase item to be bought by civilians or serving members of the ARP as a 'siren suit'. Such items were produced in the build up to the Second World War and during the early part of the war and were made famous by Winston Churchill who was pictured on numerous occasions wearing a red siren suit. This design offered an easy to don, comfortable all in one suit which was both practical and popular as a garment to be worn when going to seek refuge in an Air Raid Shelter during a bombing raid.

The suit itself is made from a thick-pile camel coloured wool and features a simple stand and fall collar. The front fastens with a high quality locking brass zip which features the maker's name of 'INVI'. This is typical of the type of zip found on expensive quality clothing from the late 1930s. A single patch pocket is located to the breast and both the arms and legs of the suit feature elastic cuffs which use elastic which is again typical of the period.

Inside the suit the original label is still present and is bright and legible. It bears the title of A.R.P EMERGENCY SUIT' Below which it states 'All Wool Women's Standard Size'. Below this the maker's name is included as 'The A.R.P Equipment Co Manor Park London'.

The suit is in good condition for its age with some limited signs of wear and use. There is a notable hole adjacent to the label and a few other small flaws but on the whole it displays well. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a vintage, pre-owned item which has some small flaws commensurate with age.

A very rare and highly collectable piece of Home Front clothing. The siren suit is one of the most iconic pieces of wartime British clothing and this is a rare and previously undocumented pattern with an ARP connection.
