    About this item

An original 1937 dated British Army officer's Blue Patrol Tunic which belonged to Major B D Ashton who was a member of the Royal Army Service Corps in the inter-war period and served throughout the Second World War. He was awarded the North Africa Star, Italy Star and France and Germany Star so he certainly saw some action.

This pattern of tunic was worn for many years by officer's of the British Army. They were worn as a 'best' uniform and for certain special or ceremonial occasions. The tunic is made from a dark blue coloured barathea wool and features a stand collar, patch pockets to the front and epaulettes are located to each shoulder. All of the buttons are Royal Army Service Corps regimental pattern examples, some of which have been removed. Two pips are fitted to one of the epaulettes whilst the other epaulette has had them removed, most likely to be added to a badge board. Most of Ashton's uniforms have one side of the insignia missing, suggesting he made himself a display in the post-war years.

Inside the tunic features a full lining of rayon. The original maker's label is present at the neck and bears the maker's name of 'J. B. Johnston Ltd'. The owner's name is present as is the 1937 date.

The tunic is a small size and when laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 17 1/2"
    Waist - 15 3/4"
    Inside arm - 18"
    Outside arm - 23 1/2"
    Shoulders - 17 1/2"
    Length at rear - 29"

The tunic is in good condition for its age and has clearly been in storage for many years - possibly since the beginning of the Second World War when the wearing of Blue Patrols was forbidden. The brass hardware is heavily tarnished and the cuff buttons have been removed. Overall it is in good condition but please take time to study the pictures and bear in mind that they are a pre-worn, vintage item which may have small flaws commensurate with age.

A nice original pre-war tunic which belonged to a man who fought throughout the Second World War.
