    About this item

An original 1943 Dated women's Civil Defence Raincoat in heavily worn condition.

Officially designated 'Coat, Gabardine, Women's C.D. A.R.P. 81', this coat was issued to women serving in a variety of roles within Civil Defence. It is made from a grey and black salt and pepper gabardine wool and features a double breasted closure, pockets at the hips and a notched collar. Tabs are present to the end of each cuff and belt loops can be found at the waist although no belt is present.

The inside of the coat is fully lined and bears a colourful label to the neck which features typical 1940s graphics. The brand name of 'Swallow' is present - a prolific manufacturer of raincoats during this period. The original issue label is also present and states the size as No. 1, the year of manufacture as 1943 and the maker as 'Swallow Raincoats'. The War Department broad arrow marking is also present.

When laid flat the coat measures -

    Chest - 19 1/2"
    Inside arm - 15 1/4"
    Outside arm - 21"
    Length - 39"
    Shoulders - 15 1/2"

The coat is in heavily worn condition as can be seen in the pictures. It features a plethora of fantastic darns which are clearly very old and give the coat a unique character which would be impossible to replicate. There is various damage to the coat including some holes, fraying and staining. Please study the pictures before purchasing.

Whilst not in good condition, this is a rare pattern of coat to find today and would make an excellent reference piece.
