    About this item

An original Royal Navy Officers uniform made by 'J. Brown & Co Tailors' of Gibraltar in 1949.

This set consists of an officers No.5 Undress Coat (often referred to as 'Reefer' or 'Monkey' coat) and matching trousers, both made from black melton wool. The coat features two rows of four buttons, a notched lapel and turn down collar as well as two welt pockets to the lower portion and another to the breast. The cuff features gold bullion denoting the rank of a Lieutenant Commander which features an 'R' in the scroll denoting Reserve. All the buttons are brass kings crown examples.

Various medal ribbons are fitted to the breast of the jacket including the Burma Star and the 1939-45 star which tell us the Briggs served during WW2.

The interior of the jacket is fully lined with rayon and features an interior pocket. The tailor's label is still present inside the pocket and states the maker's name as well as the owner's name in ink which reads Lt Briggs.

The trousers are made from matching cloth and are typical of the period. They feature a high rise waist with button fly, no rear pockets and buttons are fitted around the top of the waistband to which braces can be attached.

The suit will fit a 36"" chest well depending on desired fit. When laid flat it measures -

    Jacket
    Chest - 20"
    Inside arm - 18"
    Outside arm - 24 1/2"
    Shoulders - 16 1/2"
    Length - 28"

    Trousers
    Waist - 15 1/2"
    Inside leg - 29 1/2"

Both the jacket and trousers are in good condition with the usual signs of service wear and age. There are no serious flaws and overall the set displays very well. There is a hole to the trousers as shown in picture 13 and the fabric has become shiny at the seat and around the pocket opening from use. Whilst not perfect, the suit displays well and is certainly wearable.

Whilst dating from the post-war period, this suit is identical to wartime issue and would make a good stand in for a display or re-enactment.
