    About this item

A good original example of an early Second World War Denim Battledress Blouse.

Introduced at the beginning of the Second World War as a replacement for the earlier fatigues issued in the Great War and inter-war periods, it closely followed the design of the Battledress introduced in 1940 but was made from denim and had removable buttons. A huge stockpile of these jackets was left behind in France following the evacuation from Dunkirk. They fell into the hands of the Kriegsmarine who used them during the rest of the war.

This jacket is an early issue example which was only made prior to 1942 when it was superseded by the austerity pattern. The most obvious feature of the first pattern jacket is the pleated chest pockets. The material is also a different hue to post-war manufactured items.

The jacket features a chromium plated waist buckle which is held on with two brass buttons as are often found on early manufactured items. As well as this the jacket is fitted with a set of butterscotch coloured revolving shank buttons which are held in place with metal split rings.

Sadly the original label is no longer present although there is clear evidence of where it was originally attached. The jacket is a small size which should fit a 38 - 40"" chest well and when laid flat it measures -

    Chest - 22"
    Waist - 17 3/4"
    Inside arm - 17"
    Outside arm - 23"
    Shoulders - 18 1/2"
    Length - 23 1/2"

The jacket is in good condition and has clearly been used and laundered which have given it a great fade. There is a mark to the front and some other signs of wear and use but overall the jacket is very wearable and there are no serious flaws. Please take time to study the pictures before purchasing and bear in mind that this is a pre-worn, vintage work jacket which may have small issues commensurate with age.

All in all a good example of this early war pattern of blouse in wearable condition.
